Eco-social engagement app
Mobile app helping users get involved in local ecological and social initiatives around them.
Context
This project was built at EPITA, in a team of 4 students, over several months. The goal was to build a mobile app encouraging users' ecological and social engagement in their local community. It addresses problems we identified, such as the difficulty of finding local events that match one's interests. The app lets users discover nearby events suggested based on their interests and interact with other community members.
Architecture
As a way to explore new technologies, we built a modern, robust architecture able to support a large user base. The app relies on a microservices architecture implementing a Transactional Outbox Pattern to guarantee data consistency between services. We used NestJS for the backend, PostgreSQL with PostGIS for geospatial data, Neo4j for relationships between users and events, gRPC for inter-service communication, and Redis for caching and async messaging. The mobile frontend was built with React Native, providing a smooth, responsive user experience.
Contributions & Results
I mainly contributed to the user management microservice, along with implementing the async task handling in the Outbox. I also took part in designing the overall architecture and setting up unit and integration tests. This project was a huge technical challenge, but it gave us valuable experience in backend development.
